The CELL (center for ecological living and learning) group is starting off by getting to know the community in and around Sólheimar Eco-Village, where we are living for three months. Other than exploring and learning about the village itself, we helped out at a local farm, where we planted mint, filled pots with soil, helped pick produce, and had the opportunity to play in the maze, pick strawberries to eat, and run around. The picture on the bottom left shows the site of the 100-meter-deep well that fuels 100% of Sólheimar’s hot water and air. Sustainable, geothermal energy naturally heats Icelandic water sources fairly close to the surface, allowing all of Iceland to be 80% sustainably powered, with nearly the entire remaining 20% stemming from petroleum-based transportation. Sólheimar also grows produce in its several greenhouses year-round that supply the residents of the eco-village with food in addition to being sold in Reykjavik.
